I love when Michael cooks since it tastes so good but sadly, it's too much effort to write down recipes since he seems to add whatever he sees in the fridge to whatever sauce he's making at the time.

For the roasted potatoes and squash, I basically used this recipe for roasted potato wedges but cut the shapes into shorter wedges.

We invited a friend over for dinner and catching up with The Wire. I have to admit I'm hooked on a lot of HBO's shows. If it weren't for Netflix I might never had started watching them.

Still raining. Succumbed to the lure of a dry home and postponed my run until tomorrow. In the meantime, we feasted on pizza. While it's not completely homemade, I will shrug modesty aside and tell you that it does rival the taste of some of the best gourmet pizzas I've ever had. Some day I do aspire to make the pizza dough myself too. Recipes and tips for the dough welcomed.

When I was little, my family took a trip to New Orlenas. The only vivid memory I have is standing on tiptoe and peering into the window of a shop where they were making pralines and being filled with longing. Thankfully, my desires were simple and easy to fulfill back then and soon I'd be savoring one while strolling through the rest of the French Quarters. (I think the place was Aunt Sally's and their mail-order service is back up and running!) Years later my mom made some at home and I thought that was a miracle. And even more years later, I finally get to recreate the magic.

Yum! Michael cooked dinner tonight (but I helped do the prep work!) and we've found a new dish to go into the regular rotation. Liked it so much we made a second batch right away. We adapted the recipe from a sample issue of Cuisine at Home. Just like the cover says, it's easy enough to prepare on a weeknight after work and yet tastes good enough to serve up for dinner guests.

I'm not going to subscribe yet since I'm already subscribed to Cooking Light and Cook's Illustrated but once those run out, I'm going to have to try a round of Cuisine at Home. I'm duly impressed. No ads at all. Step by step instructions with photos for each step. Explanations of -why- they tell you to do things a certain way. Great tips and articles. And it doesn't hurt that the sample issue included recipes for some of my favorite foods (creme brulee, parmesan crusted chicken, pizza, and panini). I'm getting hungry again just thinking about it.

Oh...go to their website to see the Sample Issue of Cuisine at Home. This chicken Piccata is on page 8.

elephants!

Lookit this! National Geographic hooked up a live webcam at a watering hole in Africa. I got to watch a little elephant run across the screen and a bigger elephant trundle after it. Sure I could just watch nature specials on tv but there's a spontaneous joy in catching them over a webcam.

Go to National Geographic's Wildcam!

"Linking the live WildCam Africa Internet video camera from one of the most remote locations in southern Africa to a satellite hovering 22,500 miles (36,200 kilometers) above the Earth’s equator was the easy part. The challenge was how to keep baboons from messing with the camera, prevent insects from slithering inside the computer, and protect the whole setup from curious elephants."

Another foggy morning. This time I could only see 50-100 feet ahead of me. Perfect setting for a medieval adventure. Imagined running as a ranger elf through the forests. My imaginary sword was swinging awkwardly at my side and I adjusted the mental picture to a sharp dagger instead. Physically I felt fine but mentally, this 10 mile run felt longer. I took this at a comfortable pace and ran the PowderMill loops in the easier direction (where there are more downhills than uphills). For the last 2 blocks, I imagined coming down 5th Ave at the end of the NYC Marathon, crowds clapping and cheering. I managed to get myself choked up imagining this.

Here's a picture of a variation on Michael's Chicken Marsala. This one used some cherries from a jar I got at Trader Joe's.

After 3 weeks of slacking where I only ran 5 of my 15 scheduled runs, I remembered that I had wanted to run this 30K race. So I got in a 10-mile, 8-mile, and 5-mile run in the week leading up to this race and ended up with a great race. For some reason the official time was over 2 minutes faster than my watch time but I'm sticking with my watch time of 2:56:10 since I'm pretty sure that's what I saw on the big clock when I crossed the finish line.

I've been using ground turkey since I think it's healthier and it tastes just as good as ground beef but both taste good. I like this recipe since it cuts back on the ricotta cheese so that's not the overwhelming flavor. I love being able to make a big pan of this and having lots of leftovers to heat up for the next few days.

I love this little strip of sand at Corn Hill Beach with the steep staircase.

Despite my griping about the steepness of the hills, I have to admit the views are really rewarding. Off to the side there's a salt marsh and beyond it is a beach on the bay side. And when I do finish the run, I definitely get a sense of accomplishment even if it's a short run.

On vacation down in Cape Cod. Despite being surrounded by water, the nearby terrain is hilly! I intended to run slow to recover from my last long run but even if I had been at full strength I would've been intimidated by these hills. They just keep going.

Back in 2002, I decided to run the Yankee Homecoming 10 mile race on a whim. I wanted to run a half-marathon in the fall so I thought it would be a good benchmark. The only problem was that it was hot and I had never run that far before. I finished in a little under 2 hours and was clearly bringing up the rear. Had to walk a lot. Lonely finish. Many of the runners had already packed up and gone home and they were out of the good food.

But this year I got my revenge. )

Awesome...got myself a new PR (Personal Record). Hot night. I mostly just wanted the almost free shoes that were being included with the $40 race entry fee. Intended to take things easy but not embarrass myself and use this as a good hard tempo workout. But then I decided to cling to the runners near me and tried to keep up with them so I went out too fast at 8:10 for the first mile and kept slowing down. Still, it was enough to set a new record for me. Flat, fast course on wide trails cutting through the forest and running along a small stream.

65F to 68F. Sunny. Another somewhat sluggish-feeling day but not as bad as yesterday. Two 3-mile loops in 31:17, 29:41. Ate a bowl of oatmeal first. Came back and had another oatmeal, bowl of cereal, and glass of orange juice and some gatorade. Still not quite enough to top off in terms of enough carbs. I've been reading up on proper diets for runners. I'm not looking at diets for losing weight...just what kinds of nutrients should I be getting. Lots and lots of carbs is the main consensus. There's still a sizable contingent of Atkins runners who limit their carb intake. I'm shocked that works. I tend to eat whatever I feel like but in moderation. So I'll eat ice cream, just not the entire tub. But one nice side effect of running is that I'm paranoid I won't have enough nutrients to keep running so I eat healthier now. I'll try to make sure I get in enough vegetables and vitamins to balance things out. I also work harder at making sure I get enough sleep every night. Seems to have paid off. I used to get a really bad bout of bronchitis every year (sometimes multiple times in a winter). But I haven't had it since I started running. Even during the years where I hardly ran, the more nutritious diet has become a habit so maybe that's helped.

Simple and tantalizing. What's not to like about a bowl of cherries?

15 miles

Started 65F cloudy 80% humidity. Ended 74F cloudy/sunny 64% humidity. Actually was a very nice day for running. Tried to keep my heart rate down. in the 150-165 range. No water the whole run because I had stashed the water bottle in the car and Michael had driven off with the car trying to find me to cheer me on. He got home a little later than me and was soooo cranky since he had driven around for an hour without crossing paths with me but he calmed down by the time I showered. Frames of my glasses had come undone at 10 miles and after a minute of fiddling with them, I stuffed them in my pocket and kept running. Classical music and sleeping afterwards.

These chicken fingers taste good but are kind of a pain to make.

82% humidity. Tried to stay strong throughout. Left knee very slightly tender at first. Right calf woke up in a painful cramp. Passed one house that smelled of roses from the flowers blooming along the fence. 47:32 for 5 miles (9:30/mile)

Vegetables are fun to eat -- especially when you add bacon. Here's a good one for kale. This also works with spinach, collard greens, or chard in place of kale.
