It came! I was skeptical since the deal seemed so easy but plenty of other users on the forums reported success so I gave it a shot. Sign up for a new credit card, use it once within 45 days of opening the account, and then they'll mail you a free ipod shuffle. You don't even have to keep using the credit card. (I recommend leaving the account open and unused though.) Click to see what the mailman brought )

things a weekend can teach you:

  • Some men's pants have tiny little pockets inside the bottom of the regular pockets to hold loose change. How common is that? And why would it have taken over 3 decades for that to come to my attention? And why not put it in women's pants too?
  • A tablespoon has 3 teaspoons in it -- not 6. This likely explains the failure of some recipes past.
  • Yuppie stands for Young Urban Professional. I had never heard that before.
  • It's possible to clean up a credit report. Disputed something on an old credit card and got that late payment taken off my record! Rest behind an LJ-cut since you might not care about credit reports )

I love deals. My sister turned me onto a deal hunting site and now I mostly just occasionally skim www.slickdeals.net and www.fatwallet.com though I used to be much more active. In 2005, I recovered $2211 (basically I paid $518 for stuff worth $2316). (and really my final cost could be considered even lower since I often turned around and sold those items on ebay or craigslist for a profit.)

Tired of standing in line at the post office? If you ship a lot of packages, you may have already used the USPS's Click-n-Ship option (https://sss-web.usps.com/cns/landing.do). Very handy. But it doesn't handle first-class or media mail rates. Since we mail a lot of books (see my previous post about selling books online), we use media mail most often and had been paying a monthly service fee to endicia.com for the convenience of printing postage from home. However, Slickdeals once again rocks my world (and once again, many thanks to my sister for showing me that website). If you have a Paypal account, Slickdealer davidwlam posted about how to print media and first-class mail without paying a monthly fee (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=171359).

The Entertainment Book has lots of coupons good at restaurants, retail stores, and some online sites. While I have never bought the book (I think it costs $20-25 for the paper copy), I have heard its praises sung many a time on Slickdeals.net, a deal-hunting forum I visit. Today someone posted instructions on getting it for free online. You have to give an email address to sign up for a free account that's good for 1 year. Then you can enter a zip code and look for participating places near you. Selection is best in metropolitan areas. Lots of "buy 1 meal, get 2nd one free" or "20% off meal" coupons.

You can read the instructions in the first post of this thread:
