fitfool: (running by sea)

This past weekend I scanned through over 28,000 pictures in the Lost-n-Found section to see if I could find any more pictures of myself from the marathon (my race report in a previous post). I did pick up one more of myself and got to play detective and matched up about 3 dozen other unidentified runners (based on clues like partial bib #s, names on shirts, and country flags) and sent those in to Brightroom. Even if they don't buy the pictures, I figure they'll at least look at them and I got a little thrill every time I matched someone up to a bib #. Exciting to scan through those pictures. Lots of great handcycle pictures (their bib #s got blocked by the handcycle cranks) and I got to see a bunch of the costumed runners.

collage of NYCM pictures

Some highlights:
* One of the Achilles Team members (with TWO prosthetic legs)
* save-the-rhino
* the Blues Brothers
*
Spiderman
* Superman
* a wizard
* Handcycles headed uphill
* in full firemen gear
* Emotional displays: Exultant | overwhelmed | mission accomplished | content, with kids | fighting on | disappointed
* And if you're into ogling physiques, the warm day exposed a lot of skin (here and here and here).

Here's the link to the lost-and-found gallery of pictures: (all pictures in this post came from Brightroom)

Oh and some of you run with the Reservoir Dogs, right? Do you know this person?

And another question...the bridge that the firemen are on...which one is that? I didn't like it and neither did my feet. Oww.

I can't help it...I am so very, very impressed. Perhaps it's age and the proverbial lost opportunity, but if I had it to do over (life, that is), I'm pretty sure I'd be a runner.

Amazing photos...

It's not too late to start! I had always wanted to run a marathon but had thought it was out of my reach. But then I was partly inspired to start running by the man pictured here who ran his first marathon at the age of 65. Before that, I don't believe he had been a runner. He just got bought a book on how to train and started running.

Those are all incredible. I swear I teared up. It's really emotional for me to look through those. So many stories to tell.

Yeah...when I first flipped through the gallery, I was overwhelmed by how many pictures there were but as I kept sifting through, I was so happy to see so many runners smiling, panting, frowning, and limping. The raised, triumphant fists and tearfully clutched medals made me tingly. I was looking again at the picture of the runner strapped into a chair and it occurs to me that maybe he's not disappointed...maybe he did finish the race and then seek medical assistance? Dunno.

Hi, just saw that you added me. I hope there are more running and eating tales to be read in the future!

FYI, it's the Willis Ave bridge that the fireman are on. You did a great job sifting through all the lost and found pics -- I can't beleive you got through all of them. Speaking of varied expressions, today my father sent me a link a picture of me finishing, this was also my first marathon this year), and called it "the agony of victory," as i have my hands about halfway up, almost in a yay I did it way, but also in an I surrender way. Which is just about hwo I felt at the end.

BTW, congrats on your race.

Cool! I'm really enjoying the few posts on your journal that I've read so far. Thanks for ID'ing the bridge for me. You did awesome in your first marathon! I'm really really impressed.

Cool! I would love to run the Marine Corps Marathon some day. If it gives you any hope, when I started running, I had to start walking again after 2 blocks of jogging. I've come a long way :)

Thanks for the invite! I'm going to refrain from joining right now just because I've got several food communities on my friendslist already and I prefer the recipes that tend to include pictures. Looks like you've got a pretty active group going though!

Some time ago I worked as a volunteer for the Big Sur Marathon. This guy went past us (I was doing traffic control at the 24 mile mark) looking less than good.

At the 26 mile mark was the darkly humored, "Phiddipides died here.

At the first aid station the guy we'd seen before was already dead, though they were trying to revive him.

Looking at him, he never should have started, as he was carrying at least 50 lbs too many.

Ouch...I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad to hear that deaths are still pretty rare in marathons these days. Thanks for volunteering -- it really gave me a boost thinking there were all these volunteers out on the course helping the runners out. Do you live out near Big Sur? I've heard it's a gorgeous race course.

I did (this was in '94).

It is a beautiful course. I don't know if they still let the roller-bladers go ahead of the runners, giving them a lot of fast downhill time on the roads (long, slight slopes) which they don't normally have the chance to do safely.

Marathons were never for me. Shorter runs, sure (I used to be able to do 2-miles in 11:30, but I am old and out of shape now, 14 minutes is about all I can manage), but get past ten and I don't wanna.

Rollerbladers! Now that would be cool. You're fast! If I did 2 miles in under 16 minutes I'd be pretty happy.
