Public service announcement:

It's cheap lobster season here in New England again. Market Basket had lobster on sale for $4/pound and they'll even steam them for you if you're squeamish about doing that part yourself. Some will say you shouldn't buy lobster in the summer (I think the rule is to not buy lobster during months that don't end in 'y'). (Correction: the rule was to only eat shellfish during months ending in 'r') These are 'New Shell' lobsters so they haven't had a chance to grow into their new shells. Their shells are very soft at this point. Those lobster crackers won't be of much use with soft shell lobsters. Better to use a sturdy pair of kitchen shears to get at the meat inside. Picked up 6 lobsters for $17. That's less than the price of a single lobster roll at Neptune Oyster (oh but what a delicious lobster roll they serve! Piled high with tons of lobster meat too).

So far we've eaten steamed lobsters and Lobster Mac-n-cheese. I'll probably make the lobster quiche again unless I can think of something else to make with the remaining 2 lobsters.

What's wrong with inexpensive lobsters?

It's not inexpensive lobsters that are the problem, it's lobsters in general!

Hey this is helpful! There is a market basket near me! I never had lobster. I was alway afraid of making a mess in front of other people while eating it and felt too weirded out to kill it myself.

It's really delicious and worth having. Here's a useful guide to taking it apart:

Have one for me! (My hosuehold keeps kosher so I can't.)

Oh I highly recommend giving lobster a try! If you ever want to eat lobster at a restaurant without having to tackle the shells, you could order it at a restaurant in Chinatown. Lobster with ginger and scallions...usually they chop the lobster up into various bite-size chunks (though still need to extricate it from the bits of shells. Or you could just order a lobster roll.

Wow that's cheap lobster. I can't bring myself to eat it. It reminds me of a cockroach.

Get it outside of its shell and it doesn't look so bug like :-)

After reading this entry, I proceeded to spend an hour on the internet, trying to figure out where to acquire lobster without having to cook a live lobster. Apparently the Maine Lobster Lady sticks close to Phoenix these days, and that's only two hours north... I couldn't find a place closer then 40 minutes from work that served lobster, and that includes the Chinese restaurants!

It's time to get out of the desert.

Enjoy some for me, please!

Does your grocery store have any lobster in the freezer section? I think I've seen lobster tails there but maybe that's a New England thing... I hadn't realized lobster was hard to find in some parts of the country.

You know, I never thought to look for frozen lobster. I should take a look and see!

The Asian markets and super-high end groceries usually have a tank with a few, but they're crazy expensive and appear a bit... lethargic, so I've never been brave enough to try it.

Success! I found two stores locally that carry frozen lobster tails and it finally dropped to $9/tail (from a high of $30/tail, which is INSANE), so I picked some up. You have no idea how excited I am. I think I'm grilling them with lemon butter, and doing asparagus and herb stuffed potatoes tomorrow with french bread.

So... you can eat lobsters in January, February, and July? That doesn't sound right...

Good catch! I had messed up the rule...it was to only eat shellfish in the months ending in 'r' but that seems far too restrictive to me.

I think it's oysters in months that contain an r. ;)

That leaves out June, July, and August, when they breed.

I think the rest of them are fine. We always ate tons of other shellfish in the summer :)
