I've traditionally said I'm bad with faces and names. True enough. But I also tend not to notice a lot of physical things about people, sometimes down to the level of not even remembering if the person was black or white. On the plus side, I do very little prejudging of people based on looks. On the minus side, I flounder in that game where you link actors all the way back to Kevin Bacon. So I stumbled across this page (
http://www.faceblind.org/research/) tonight talking about
prosopagnosia, a.k.a. face blindness. So there's a condition where the ability to recognize faces is impaired. I don't think I have it quite this badly since I do eventually learn a person's face but I do definitely need to see a person several times for a fair bit of time each time before I have their face in memory enough to recognize them the next time I see them. Even then I might be stumped trying to recall specific information. Once in 4th grade, my sister was asking me to describe one of my friends. When she wanted to know his hair color, I couldn't recall if it was blond or brown or maybe something in between. This despite a year of having classes with him, playing with him at recess, and riding the bus with him. Rehearsing with photographs seems to help. But in movies, I'll frequently be uncertain about how the plot is unfolding since I'm not sure if that's the same actress from one scene to another. I also seem to be better at remembering male faces than female faces.
Other links talking about it:

More like I could spend an entire evening chatting with someone at a party and then not recognize them again the next week. If they prompt me with subjects from the conversation, it'll come back to me but I just don't recognize the face right away.
